Practice Democracy Before You Spread It

Putin says U.S. wants to dominate world, reports Reuters.

Here’s a thought-provoking quote:

“People are always teaching us democracy but the people who teach us democracy don’t want to learn it themselves” [Russian President Vladimir Putin]

The United States of America used to be a democracy. As democracy declines in the U.S., I think the U.S. is giving the world a new message: “Do as I say, not as I do.”

The United States isn’t and has never been a democracy. It’s actually a Constitutional republic. I’ve often heard people argue how this protects rights since the constitution limits the powers of the government while the republic allows the people to be represented. My question has always been: why wouldn’t a constitutional democracy work just as well? The constitution would still limit the powers of government.

Something worth thinking about.
